Imagine renting a movie called “When JJ met Robin.” It’s a love story and a comedy, a romantic comedy really. And yes, even though it’s sort of a chick flick, there’s automatic weapons involved so the guys can enjoy it too. The story begins where you see Robin arrive on base in Okinawa. As she leans over to pick up her bag and handsome guy walks past her to get on his flight. He’s on his way to be stationed in California. Robin throws her bag over her shoulder, without a chance at seeing the handsome guy, and makes her way to her destination. There’s scenes in between where you see Robin and her friends interacting and scenes where you see the handsome guy and his friends. Their lives are full of fun and adventure, but you can tell they are missing one thing. And as you are watching you know these two would be perfect for another. So each random chance meeting you are rooting for!
Two years later Robin is given orders to be stationed in California. Oh boy, you know the handsome guy is in California, maybe they will meet there. She lands in the base just as you see the handsome guy getting his orders to deploy to Iraq. The chance meeting is an epic fail as JJ boards his plane to leave for Iraq. Nearly a few months later, Robin is now finding herself on a plane to Iraq for deployment. A bit bummed about leaving beautiful California for the hot and sweaty dessert of Iraq is not ideal, but she anticipated adventure. As she arrives at the air terminal, you see the handsome guy walk in *GASP* Will they see each other? Will they finally meet? He looks over to a group and beautiful Robin catches his eye. He sees her smiling and mingling and wants to gain the courage to approach her. While he chats with some Army guys he looks up and she is gone.
Robin is getting settled into her duties, she is to monitor communication lines within Iraq. To make sure the phone lines are up and secure, she is forced to make a call every hour to Camp Mejid. She picks up the phone to call. The screen splits as you see the handsome guy answer the phone. “Sgt Lomeli” he says. She explains she is going to be making frequent calls hourly then hangs up. An hour later, she calls once again and he answers with “What’s your favorite color?” Robin says, “Ummmmm, pink. How come?” He says, “Well since you have to call every hour I’m gonna ask you a random question each time you call.” She giggled, then hung up. The next call, he asked another question. He was sweet, he was funny. And after tons of calls they really got to know each other. They had so much in common, they made each other smile and laugh. It was easy to pass the time dong a mundane task talking to him. After a few weeks of this, Sgt. Lomeli wanted to meet Robin. She was fascinating.
One dark Iraqi night, they met. Both dressed in their camouflage uniforms, Robin walked up and saw the handsome guy for the first time. Sgt. Lomeli, whom we now know as JJ, realized she was the beautiful girl from the air terminal. They spent that night hanging out under the starry sky talking and laughing. It was the start of something new. From that moment on they were inseperable.
When Robin called me looking for a photographer to shoot their wedding, she told me this story and I got chills. I totally thought it was something out of a movie. The fact that they had chased each other all over the world, to finally meet in the Iraqi desert is just crazy! Robin and JJ have been stationed in Texas since last year when they started planning their wedding in Long Beach. Just a few weeks ago, they finally were stationed here in Southern California and we wanted a chance to get to know them better and do an Engagement session! Robin got all glommed up in her favorite color and we hit San Diego’s downtown area. Later on we headed to Windansea Beach in La Jolla for a romantic backdrop.
Robin & JJ we are so excited for your wedding this weekend! We can’t wait!!
